George Miller Teases New Mad Max Adventures Amidst Mixed Reception of Furiosa

George Miller is contemplating another installment in the Mad Max series.

Although Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga provided an engaging cinema experience, the prequel did not quite achieve a comparable degree of commendation as its predecessor, Mad Max: Fury Road. The film, led by Anya Taylor-Joy, also fell short at the box office, earning less than $175 million. Considering its reported budget of $168 million, excluding marketing expenses, this performance suggests it struggled commercially. However, it is important to mention that additional revenue may have emerged from digital and on-demand channels post-release.

This discussion arises because, despite the recent underwhelming financial results of Mad Max films, George Miller has a new concept for the franchise.

In conversation with Vulture, Miller shared that he has a multitude of ideas and narratives, including another adventure in the Wasteland. Details about this new concept, such as its potential focus on a specific character, remain unclear. What Miller has confirmed is that he is not in a hurry to bring this project to fruition.

He mentioned, "We’ve got another script. But having been involved in storytelling for so long, I find myself overloaded with stories—not just in my mind, but also in screenplay form or as detailed notes that are nearby. Honestly, I’m a professional daydreamer. This was seen as a flaw during my childhood, with comments like 'George would do better at school if he didn't daydream so much' appearing on my report cards."

Miller continued, "There are numerous stories to explore. One of them turns out to be a Mad Max tale. It’s not the next project I plan to tackle, though, as I have two other priorities in mind for the immediate future. However, if circumstances align favorably, anything is possible. Too often, you find yourself prepared for a film, only for unexpected events to alter the course. Some things come together while others cannot, therefore what I can express is we will see."

Are you interested in seeing another Mad Max film? It’s worth noting that Miller is currently 80 years old, which might lead one to temper expectations for many new releases from this celebrated director. Nevertheless, it’s inspiring to consider that both Martin Scorsese and Ridley Scott are also advancing in age, with Scott nearing 88 years.
